Living near Wisconsin, my diet is influenced somewhat by the German-based culture. Here's a great bratwurst recipe if you're tired of just plain old grilling them.
Ingredients:
1 large onion sliced 1/4" thick
2 cloves of garlic---smashed with the flat side of a knife -----or just use the minced garlic from the jar....nobody will know :-)
12 brats----good brats, not those bright white things
1/4 cup butter (1/2 stick)-----no substitutes!
freshly ground (or not) black pepper (to taste)
6 cans/bottles of beer------any kind, just not light beer
12 buns-----bigger than hot dog buns------get the really big ones if you like to load them up with condiments
Method:
This recipe uses both the stovetop and the grill.
Into a stock pot place the onion, garlic, brats, butter, pepper and beer. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer gently, covered, for 1 hour. Remove brats to your grill and brown on as many sides as the brats allow. When browned, return the brats to the stock pot and simmer another 20 minutes before serving.
That's it!
Garnish the brats with sauerkraut, brown mustard, horseradish, raw onion or onion from the stockpot, or whatever you'd like.
I hope you enjoy and please add a recipe of your own. Just start a new thread with what your recipe is for as the subject of the thread.
